Research and Development
Our subsidiaries have a long tradition of successful research and development. This has resulted not only in a large number of patents, but above all in a much larger number of products that have been successfully launched onto the market in the past. That is what made the Tognum Group become one of the world’s leading suppliers of powerful diesel-powered and gas-powered engines, propulsion systems, components and decentralised energy systems. From 2005 to 2007 alone, no less than 27 new engine designs appeared on the market. And in the periods from 2008 to 2010 and from 2011 to 2014, the current schedule calls for 23 more new engine versions in each case.
The majority of the products launched onto the market in the course of the previous years have been from the 2000 and 4000 diesel engine series, and the 4000 gas series. The new 1600 series followed in 2009. Tognum is setting standards with these engines. One of Tognum’s special fields is increasing engine efficiency. Comparing the 4000 series with its predecessor, the 595, for example, this means a 9 percent reduction in weight, a 5 percent reduction in engine volume, and a 6 percent reduction in fuel consumption, plus compliance with the latest IMO and EPA emission regulations. At the same time, our continuing engine development programme for the next generations focuses in particular on key technologies such as electronics, fuel injection systems , forced induction and after treatment of exhaust gases.
